The Milkmaid and Her Pail

A milkmaid was walking to market with a pail of fresh milk on her head, happy and dreamy.

As she walked, she began to imagine: «With the milk I'll buy eggs; from the eggs will hatch chicks; I'll sell the chickens and buy a new dress».

«In that lovely dress», she dreamed on, «I'll go to the fair, and everyone will want to dance with me. And proudly I'll shake my head no, like this…».

And as she moved her head with such excitement, the pail fell and the milk spilled completely onto the ground.

There stood the milkmaid, looking at the white puddle, realizing she had forgotten the one thing she truly held in her hands.
